Every year on June 8th, we celebrate World Oceans Day to recognize the impact the ocean has on our lives and what we can do to preserve it. We take action at our marinas to help protect the oceans, learn more about the practices we have in place and what actions you can take to preserve our blue planet.
At Boston Yacht Haven, we recently made the switch to canned water in aluminum packaging as a more sustainable alternative to single-use plastic water bottles. When you stay at the Inn at Boston Yacht Haven, you will now find a can of “Open Water” in your guest room, a brand that is carbon-neutral and even donates 1% of sales to ocean conservation initiatives. We are proud to make this switch and officially do away with single-use plastic water bottles for good!
Many of our winter customers at Charlestown Marina and Boston Harbor Shipyard and Marina were delighted to participate in a shrink wrap recycling program introduced this year. We partnered with Clean Ocean Access, a nonprofit based in Rhode Island, to collect and recycle plastic shrink wrap at our facilities.
All Ocean Havens properties have clearly marked recycling receptacles, we encourage our valued guests to please recycle whenever it is possible. In addition to recycling, there are other steps you can take in protecting the health of our oceans.
It is incredibly important to protect you and your family from the sun’s rays when spending the day out on the water, but have you ever thought about the impact your sunscreen may have on the environment around you? Many sunscreens contain chemicals that can be harmful to marine wildlife, so when shopping, look for a “reef safe” sunscreen to pack for your next boat day this summer.
Before heading out on a fishing trip, be sure to read up on your local fishing regulations. Many of the species you will find in the New England region have minimum size regulations, possession limits, and more in order to protect the overall population. Remember to retrieve all lines, nets, traps, etc. to prevent ghost gear being left behind in the water that could pose a threat to other wildlife.
Enjoy your day on the water, and return home to an Ocean Havens Marina.
